For most domestic situations the choice of boiler is decided by the size of the property, the families hot water requirements and the space available for installation.

The two main types of boiler system are: -

1. Regular, or conventional boilers.

This is the name given to boilers that are not combination boilers.

Regular boilers are available as wall mounted or floor standing units, and provide direct space heating. To provide domestic hot water they have to be connected to a storage system as they do not have the capacity to provide direct, instantaneous hot water.

2. Combination or “Combi” boilers.

Combi boilers provide both space heating and direct domestic hot water. The most common type of combi boiler is the instantaneous type without any type of internal storage of hot water. These units are capable of providing continuous hot water but at a flow rate lower than could be expected from a storage system. These units may be less suitable in situations where more than one hot tap may be in use at the same time. Because there is no need for a storage cylinder or cisterns this type of installation will save space.

Because of the requirement to achieve the regulation SEDBUK ratings both boiler types are now manufactured as (Condensing boilers ).
