Regulations

The following points outline the main requirements of the Building Regulations for central heating in existing dwellings in England and Wales from April 2002 (Part L), and the latest amendments applicable from April 2005.

The main point of the regulations is the setting of a minimum boiler efficiency.

Currently the regulations mean that boilers must have an efficiency (SEDBUK rating) of 86% or better.

The regulations concerning efficiency apply to both conventional and combi boilers.

The replacement of a boiler or hot water storage vessel is now covered by the regulations and may require some upgrading of the system and/or controls.
